meet the team
Hi, I’m Elizabeth!
I am the owner of Mini Manta Ray’s Swim School.
I have always loved swimming and I am passionate about giving everyone the opportunity to learn to swim. Living close to the sea, I believe it is especially important for children and adults to be able to swim. It’s wonderful to see children and adults becoming confident in the water, reaching their personal goals, and most importantly, having fun! I believe swimming is such an important life skill.
I have been a swimming teacher for over 29 years, teaching a wide range of different classes from babies to adults, non- swimmers to swimmers, and recreational swimmers to triathletes and Channel Swimmers, and in different settings; such as in the pool, lido, sea, lakes and in our own Endless Pool. I am a qualified Level 2 ASA Adult and Child Swimming Teacher, as well as a qualified Swim England Coach and British Open Water Coach. I have been running my own swim school for almost 7 years and I am president and Head Coach of Wimborne Manta Ray’s Swimming Club. I have also gained the Swimming Teachers Safety Award qualification (teacher rescue) and Fitness Instructor Award. I am a fully qualified Mermaid Instructor, and I have been running Mermaid classes for adults and children for over 5 ½ years.
I began my swim school in 2018, starting with just one class a week, with only two adults and babies to begin with. The classes grew quickly though, and I now run 12 classes over 3 days, with a small friendly team of qualified swimming teachers. I found that there wasn’t enough pool time available in the local swimming pools to teach school children and adults, and so after planning for over 3 years, my husband and I finally finished building our Endless Pool in our purpose built pool room in our garden. This has allowed me to teach all ages, at all times of the day, and since it opened for business in 2020, I have taught over 330 clients in our pool. I am so pleased to have been able to help babies, children, parents, and adults learnt to swim.
My mother first took my twin sister and I swimming when we were 18 months old, I could swim unaided by the time I was 3, and when we were eight, we joined Ferndown Otters Swimming Club. I swam competitively for over 10 years, competing for Dorset at inter-county level. I was also a qualified lifeguard from the age of 18. I have had many years of experience teaching children in and out of the water. I was a primary school teacher for 17 years, where I taught children aged 4 – 13 years old, and I was the school’s swimming coordinator at three different schools. I now swim for Poole Swimming Club masters, and enjoy competing and training with them, swimming at county and National level. In 2018 I achieved an age group 11th place in England for 5km in open water, and in 2024 I gained 3 age group county and club records in fly in pool events.
When I am not teaching swimming, I am usually swimming – with or without a mermaid tail, or planning swimming events or challenges, and enjoying family time, with our two children and my husband. I love skiing, hiking, yoga, cycling, running, kayaking and camping with family and friends.
I am a cold water and ice swimmer, and my passion for ice swimming has flourished in the last couple of years, resulting in a selection for the British Ice Swimming Team. In January, 2025, I swam for Great Britain in the 6th IISA (International Ice Swimming Association) World Championships, competing in water around 1.8 degrees Celsius. I took home an age group bronze and silver medal, in 50m and 100m Fly respectively, and an age group 5th place in 200m Individual medley. It was freezing and so cold that ice had to be chipped off the pool before we could compete! I also gained three age group British Records, and achieved a Dorset County Achievement Award. In February 2025, I became the 589th person in the world to have under taken as ice mile, an achievement that I am very proud of. Around the same time, I jointly organised the first ice swimming event in Dorset, at Shaftesbury Lido, involving over 100 competitors. I believe swimming is great for our health and well-being, and I want to continue to encourage people, young and old, with their swimming.
My love of mermaid swimming has taken me to many places to complete my own personal challenges to raise money for various charities, such as funds for ocean conservation projects, mental health charities, and swimming lessons for children with disabilities; all causes that I am very passionate about. In 2022, I did my first ever Mermaid swimming challenge, becoming the first mermaid to swim around Brownsea Island. In 2023, I swam the length of Windermere (17 km) in my mermaid tail, and in 2024, I completed my furthest mermaid swim to date, swimming from Old Harry Rocks to The Needles (23km). All this was done with months of practise and hard work. I hope that my enthusiasm for mermaiding is contagious, and inspires others to give it a go!
I began my open water swimming journey after joining East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club, in 2017, where my coach inspired me to join a Channel relay team. I trained hard for 2 years and then swam the Channel in a six person relay team, taking us 12 hours 35 minutes to complete. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! Swimming in the cold water back then, in under 16 degrees for the 2 hour qualification, was one of the hardest swims I had done. It took me three attempts to do it, but hard work, true determination and encouragement from my coach got me through.
Just as my coach did, I hope to inspire and encourage adults and children alike with their swimming, showing them what they are capable of achieving. I believe that with focus and determination, everyone can achieve their own goals - however big or small. Go for it! You can do It!
