Expect fun, friendship and lots of laughter and giggles!
We welcome all ages in this class from 18 years and upwards. You don’t need to be an amazing swimmer to Mermaid.
Who can join?
The class is for all abilities: beginners, improvers and experienced mermaids. All you need to be able to do is be able to swim without assistance/buoyancy aids. It’s great if you can swim putting your face in the water, but not essential. Some of our mermaids have been mermaiding with me for over 4 years, whilst others are completely brand new to this new exciting hobby. You will be hooked!
What does the class include?
The cost of the class includes use of the tails and fins during each class, tuition from a qualified Fit2Fit Mermaid Instructor (me!) and lots of fun and giggles during the classes! Booking is in a block with payment per term. A taster session is available, if you want to make sure this fun hobby is for you.
Mermaid class overview
A typical class starts with a 10 minute aqua aerobic warm up to music, using different fitness aids each week, such as dumb bells, noodles, finger paddles and swimming gloves.
Mermaids then put their fins and tails on and we swim lengths using with a variety of mermaid strokes, on the surface and under water. This is great fitness and the mermaids especially love the challenge of underwater swimming.
It's then time for some mermaid skill practise, such as underwater cross overs, tail flips, handstands and mermaid somersaults! We swim through floating and sinking hoops and in-between 'seaweed'! Our mermaids work in groups, pairs and individually, and it's great fun. We often create sequences of skills (a bit like synchronise swimming). The mermaid instructor (myself) teachers from the pool edge, giving technique guidance, encouragement and instruction. Activities are differentiated according to ability and experience and each session builds of new skills learn previously.
There are often themed evenings during the mermaid class, such as at Halloween, Fireworks night, Christmas and Easter. In the Summer months, we go to Shore Road Beach, near Sandbanks Beach, to mermaid swim and apply all our skills learnt during the Winter/Spring season, in the open water.
What are the Benefits of swimming in a Mermaid tail?
Swimming in a mermaid tail, which involves using a monofin to perform the dolphin kick, offers numerous physical and mental benefits. It is a full-body workout that is low-impact and can be an exciting, motivating alternative to traditional exercise.
Physical Benefits
Full-Body Workout: Mermaiding engages your entire body, from your arms and shoulders to your core, legs, and glutes.
Enhanced Core Strength: The dolphin kick requires continuous engagement of your abs, obliques, and lower back muscles to maintain balance and control, leading to a stronger, more stable core.
Increased Leg Power and Endurance: The up and down motion of the monofin works the quad and hamstring muscles, building power and endurance over time.
Improved Flexibility and Agility: The undulating movement required for efficient swimming in a tail helps to increase flexibility in the hips and shoulders and improves agility and coordination in the water.
Cardiovascular Health: It is an excellent cardio workout that elevates your heart rate, burns calories, and improves your cardiopulmonary health and stamina.
Low-Impact Exercise: The natural buoyancy of water reduces strain on your joints, making it a safe exercise option for individuals looking to stay active with a lower risk of injury.
Increased Speed and Efficiency: The monofin is an efficient piece of equipment that allows swimmers to move through the water faster than traditional swimming, which can be an empowering experience.
Mental and Emotional Benefits
Motivation and Fun: The unique and playful aspect of swimming as a mermaid can be a strong motivator for both children and adults to get into the water and stick with a fitness routine.
Confidence and Self-Esteem: Mastering the technique and experiencing the graceful movement of a mermaid can build confidence and provide an outlet for creative self-expression.
Stress Relief: Like other forms of swimming, mermaiding can reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of well-being and a mental break from daily life.
We enjoy visiting exciting open water locations in our Mermaid pod, including Durdle Door and Swanage Old Pier, and we often get involved in charity events in our tails, such as the Annual Swimathon for Cancer Research and Marie Curie, a Julia’s House Charity event, and the RNLI 24 hour fundraiser swim. We enjoy sauna and Mermaid swim sessions at local beaches (such as Sandbanks and Swanage) in the Winter months. We also do the occasional mermaid display! These have included a display at Victoria School and Mermaid shows at the ice swimming event, SLICE, at Shaftesbury Lido in 5.4 degrees!
If you’d like to come and join us and see what the fun is all about, please book here for a taster session or a full term of Mermaid classes. We look forward to seeing you there!
Please note, it is a female class, but if you are male and would like to give mermaiding a try, we have private party slots available to book, for up to 12 participants.
