Mermaid experiences

ages 5yrs - 8yrs (Adult & Child)

Our children’s mermaid experiences are an amazing way for your child to experience swimming like a mermaid, in a safe and friendly environment, with a fully qualified and experienced mermaid instructor.

  • St. Michael’s Middle School,
    Colehill Ln, Wimborne
    BH21 7AB

Mermaid Experiences run on a monthly basis on Sunday afternoons, and they are a fun packed hour session.

  • An hour-long session where we assess the child’s swim ability, choose a tail, follow a demonstration with techniques and tricks. Then we play mermaid games from treasure hunts to races!

Who can join?

Adult and Child aged 5 – 8 years: An adult must accompany the child in the water. (The adult will not be wearing a tail. They must be a good swimmer). Suitable for weak/non swimmers, 5 – 8 years old. Disc armbands and woggles will be available if your child needs buoyancy aids (or the child may use their own).

These Adult and Child Mermaid Experiences are suitable for all swimming abilities, from non/weak/beginner swimmers to confident swimmers, and for first time Mermaids to children who have been mermaiding with me many times before.

The cost of the experience includes hire of tail and fin, mermaid tuition from a qualified Fit2Fit Mermaid Instructor (myself - Eliza Star-Kelp!), mermaid games, a certificate, and photos and videos sent to your WhatsApp.

Mermaid experience overview

A typical Mermaid Experience starts with selecting a fin and tail (we have a huge selection), an on-land photo, followed by safety instructions. Often, in the 5 – 8 years Adult and Child Experience, there will be a visit from a Mermaid, demonstrating mermaid swimming before the children get started.

Children will practise how to swim using a dolphin (mermaid) kick. They will then learn different ways of swimming with a tail: on the surface and under the water, using different strokes, turns and log rolls. Some children may learn to do mermaid somersaults and/or handstands.

It's then time for some exciting mermaid games. These include treasure hunts (retrieving sinkers from the pool floor), relay races, swimming through floating and sinking hoops and in-between 'seaweed'! Our mermaids play games in groups, pairs and individually, and it's great fun. The mermaid instructor (myself) teachers from the pool edge, giving technique guidance, encouragement and instruction. Activities are differentiated according to ability and experience. Many children return for many more Mermaid Experiences and the each experience builds on new skills learnt previously.

At the end of the Experience, there is a ‘free play’ session and photo shoot, with large floats, small inflatables, balls and music. Each child is presented with a certificate, which is numbered, and children enjoy collecting the certificates each time they do a Mermaid Experience!

All Mermaid Experiences/Classes are taught by fully qualified Fit2Fit Mermaid Instructor, Elizabeth Mills.
